| The Christmas
Piano Tree A One-Act Play by Jina Bacarr |
| The
scene is Christmas Eve: Mrs. Baxter is mad at God because she lost her husband and she's being evicted on Christmas! Her only hope is to sell her husband's old piano. There's a knock on the door... |
"My cell phone is dead...can I use your phone?...God directed me to
your
house."
"I don't believe you...mine is the only house with the light on." "Hey, lady, I ain't bad. I read the Bible." "And I
watch MTV...goodnight." |
|
|
"Good grief, child, you're pregnant!" "So, it's none of your business, Mrs. Baxter. Can't I call you Mrs. B? Down at the detention center, I always call the counselors by their first names." "Ah, ha,
that explains
the pink hair. What have they got you in there for? Drugs,
stealing...or a bad hair job?" |
|
"Luke, it's Rachel...yeah, I still have pink hair...yeah, I'm sure it's your kid...Luke? Luke? |
"I
used to shoot crystal meth, but I've been clean for five whole weeks,
Mrs.
B...do you know how hard that is when you'd give anything
to get high?"
"What's stopping you?" "My baby. I ain't gonna have no kid that's addicted to drugs. I'm trying, but you...you've given up." "I just
don't want
to remember...Frank's gone...."
|
|
"How'd you
guys meet?"
"I was dancing in a show and he was playing the piano...he was a good husband. That's why I miss him so much." "How come you don't have no Christmas tree, Mrs. B.?" "I have nothing to celebrate with Frank gone." "Your husband will never leave you...you'll always have his music." |
"Look, Mrs. B., you've got your Christmas tree right here. I saw this on Oprah. A tree is made of wood and that wood was once a tree, so why not a Christmas Piano Tree?" |
"No one's gonna buy this old piano, Mrs. B. It don't sound so good." "What can be wrong with it..." |

"Good Lord, rent money! Frank always said the piano
would be
my salvation after he died. "
|
| |
"You're
not the little rebel you pretend to be. Underneath that mop of
pink
hair is a scared little girl...you and the baby are going to come and
live
with me." |
| |
"I've got your rent money, now get over here before I spend it...and hurry, we're going to the hospital...no, I'm not sick. We're going to have a baby!" |
